Speechpad has a wide range of corporate clientele including AAA Insurance Providers, NYU, About.com, Netflix, Amazon, LinkedIn, L’Oreal, Yahoo, Upworthy, to mention but a few. Even with the serious namedropping going on, the company still accepts workers around the globe, just like these other companies mentioned here.
The Speechpad Qualification Test
How do you start off working for Speechpad? By simply applying to do so. There’s a wide variety of qualifications on this site, and to start off, you need to pass the basic test, grammar test and fill a confidentiality form.
You are required to score 94 and above in the transcription assessment test to start working. The test is automatically graded and once you submit it, you’ll know immediately if you have qualified.
Beginners are paid $0.25 per audio minute which translates to $15 per audio hour.
Speechpad Work Process
On the job board you need to select “Show only jobs I’m qualified for” tab to see the jobs you’re qualified to work on. (You aren’t able to work on any and all jobs. More on this later)
There’s a 30-second preview available, meaning that you can listen to the audio file briefly before accepting it. You can do this by clicking on the video/audio icon at the beginning of every job.
If the file is clear enough to you, click the “Accept Job” button to begin working on it.
You also don’t have to transcribe on the site. You can download the file and work offline using your favorite transcription tool e.g. ExpressScribe, or Inqscribe. You can also work online on the transcription window if you choose to do so.
The thing about Speechpad though, is that their TATs (turnaround times) can be pretty tight.
One audio hour’s TAT is 8 hours, although most jobs have time extensions for half the original time. For example, you can get an extension of up to four hours for a 60-minute file. Take note also, that you need to keep refreshing the browser to see the newly uploaded files.
The Good Things About Working At Speechpad
Like many transcription companies, transcripts are reviewed by editors and as a transcriber, you get to see the original versus the corrections made.
This goes a long way in helping you learn from your mistakes and improve the quality of your work. Every job you submit is reviewed and given a rating.
Here’s where you need to pay full attention. If your rating drops below 94, you won’t be able to access jobs.
So let’s ensure the transcripts we submit are awesome!
Another perk is that support at Speechpad is awesome. You can email them your queries any time and they reply within minutes 24/7.
If you experience technical issues while working on a file, all you have to do is email and explain to them and they will guide you on what to do next. There’s also a live chat option on this site.
You can return jobs you deem horrible/unclear files or files with technicalities and pick another one. There’s no penalty for that.
If you make a habit of doing that and return five jobs within 24 hours, or 20 jobs within a week, your account will be suspended. They do this to avoid cherry-picking.
Apart from transcribing, you’ll find web video captioning jobs. To qualify these jobs, you’ll need to pass yet another test.
If you prove to be a consistently accurate transcriber who submits work on time, you’ll find that there are plenty of growth opportunities on this site.
Speechpad Growth Opportunities
If you have a total of 500 transcribed minutes under your belt and have maintained a rating of 96, you get a Rush Job qualification.
There is no time extension for these kinds of jobs. Speechpad will pay you $0.40 per minute or more for rush jobs.
There’s also the reviewer qualification. To be granted this qualification you have to email support when you hit a total of 1,000 minutes and have maintained a rating of 98 or higher.
If you have a background in Insurance, they have a qualification for you too. Insurance transcription jobs pay better than general transcription.
If you have Spanish speaking and translation skills, you’re in luck. Speechpad has something for you too. All you have to do is pass a test to work on Spanish jobs.
Finally, there’s a Spot Check qualification. The requirements to get this qualification are similar to Reviewer’s requirement. Spot check jobs are the highest paid jobs on Speechpad. They pay up to $0.75 per audio minute.
The work process is gradual. After you have transcribed a total of 30 minutes as a beginner and have maintained good ratings, you’ll be able to access longer files and so on.
How and When Does Speechpad Pay?
Speechpad pays every Friday via Paypal. Payments are done for jobs that have been reviewed. If jobs are still in review they roll on to the next Friday.
Due to the short TAT, most beginners are locked out as they are not able to beat the TAT. Also, there aren’t as many jobs for beginners on Speechpad. This can be quite discouraging for newbies.
Speechpad is a pretty decent transcription site. They have plenty of work and have a good reputation, compared to other sites that get lots of complaints from their workers such as this one. If you have a good ear, good grammar and fast typing skills, you should give Speechpad a try.
