Magic Ears is an online language teaching company that was founded in 2016.

They operate out of Beijing and ZhengZhou in China and from Tennessee in the US.

On this platform, native English speakers from the US or Canada earn money by teaching English to Chinese kids aged between 4 and 12.

Magic Ears, according to their site, state that they provide high-quality education for children with the help of their awesome teachers and advanced tech.

Teaching Requirements

Individuals who want to teach on the platform need to have the following requirements:

  • Be a native speaker from USA or Canada. However, this doesn’t mean that you must be located in those two countries when you are teaching. There are Magic Ears teachers who are based in Asia, South America, Africa and other locations.
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Have an ESL certification such as CELTA, TEFL, TESOL.
  • Have some teaching experience.

It appears that teaching experience is an essential qualifying factor on this platform. Some applicants have stated that your application will be rejected quickly if you put 0 (zero) as your teaching experience.

They are also known to be passionate about the kind of environment you have. You need to have good lighting in your teaching room, a kid-friendly/colorful background, and a quiet room as well.

The platform also recommends that you use at least two props per class. Some of the props that teachers use are toys, costumes, posters, flashcards, charts, etc.

Technical Requirements – What Tools Will You Need?

Here are the Magic Ears tech requirements.

  • A headset with a mic and webcam.
  • Internet speeds – 10 mbps upload and 10 mbps download.
  • Ethernet cord is recommended for stability. Magic Ears prefer ethernet over Wi-Fi.

PS: The Wi-Fi signal can at times compete with other equipment you have in the house and that’s why the ethernet cable is recommended. It’s a solid connection that prevents interferences from occurring, leading to a smooth teaching experience.

Magic Ears Application/Hiring Process

Here are the steps you will undergo for the Magic Ears application.

  • Create an account at Magic Ears application page.
  • Fill out the application.
  • Wait to hear back from Magic Ears. It takes two business days to hear back from them.
  • Schedule your interview. There will be two types of interviews for you to do. A live interview with a live interviewer or you can record your interview.
  • Once you have done your interview, you will hear back from the company within two days, HOPEFULLY, letting you know that you can move on to the next stage of the application process.
  • When you receive the response, you will need to schedule the 1V4. The 1v4 is a training session with one trainer and four other applicants. You will need to have a headphone and be connected to a router for this. Have a paper and a pen so that you can take notes.
  • Once you are through with that training, you head on to the 1v1 training. In the 1v1 training, technical requirements will be checked, your background and lighting, whether you have a headset, and whether you have a stable internet connection.
  • In the 1v1 training, the interviewer will take you through the Magic Ears platform, the policies of the company and ensure that you can implement stuff that you learned during the previous training – the 1v4.
  • You will then do a demo class. You will act as a teacher and the interviewer will be the student. You will have upto ten minutes to complete this demo.
  • When you’re done with your 1v1 training, you will move on to your trial class. You’ll be dealing with REAL students this time! You will receive the training materials 24 hours in advance.
  • Once you are through with that trial class, you will hear back from the Magic Ears team 2 days later. They will be giving you feedback on how you did the trial class.
  • A background check will be done followed by you signing the contract!

PS: If your performance in the trial class wasn’t ideal, you will receive some more help and training in preparation for a second trial class.

Magic Ears Work Process

Magic Ears operates a bit differently from other online teaching gigs.

Every start of the month, you will log in to the Magic Ears site, select the times you are available that month, and Magic Ears will book you for classes.

You don’t have to promote yourself on this platform. That also means that you can get booked on the very first week of your working on Magic Ears!

There are also no regular students on Magic Ears. You get a set of four FRESH students in every class.

A lot of your classes will be on weekdays but if you really wanted to keep yourself busy with Magic Ears, there are weekend classes as well.

The teaching experience is fun and engaging for the more energetic teachers since they get to teach four students instead of one.

Magic Ears also has a ‘Teacher Rank’ that is determined by parent and supervisor feedback. The ranks are Freshman, Benchmark, Junior, Senior and finally, Magic Master.

The more you teach and the better the feedback you receive, the more likely your schedule will fill up completely.

Pros of Working at Magic Ears

  • The teaching platform is very advanced.
  • You are guaranteed a certain % of bookings after you teach ten classes. The percentage is higher after 100 classes.
  • The customer support is reliable and professional.  There is always someone to assist you when you need help.
  • The teaching platform has been praised consistently and it is rare for tech issues to occur. The classes are interactive and seem to fly by fast.

Cons of Magic Ears

  • Magic Ears requires LOTS of energy from its teachers. If you have that kind of personality, then that won’t be a problem. If you are a bit introverted, that might be a challenge.
  • Writing feedback on how all FOUR students did in class can be a challenge. You might not remember all the details.

Tips to Working at Magic Ears

  • It’s your personality and ability to keep the students engaged and wanting to come back that’s the important part. You need to have lots of energy, use facial expressions to …express yourself adequately and use body language to help your students grasp ideas.
  • Please MUTE any noise that does not have to do with student participation.
  • Take a close look at the timing as you teach your students to avoid having lots of minutes left at the end of the class.
  • Remember, you can switch off the student(s) camera if the student is misbehaving or being too distracting.

In conclusion, Magic Ears is a fun and professional platform that can be a great fit for you especially if you have the energy to handle more than one student.
