Let’s talk about TranscribeMe – an awesome work from home transcription opportunity.

Is TranscribeMe Legit?

Oh yes it is! The company was founded in 2011 and has a huge customer base that includes lawyers, insurance companies, churches, conference attendees, and researchers who regularly need their audio files transcribed.

It boasts of having partnered with companies such as Kaplan, KMR, Deloitte, Harvard University, Cisco, among others.

TranscribeMe is a great place for newbies to sharpen their skills. The company doesn’t require you to have transcription experience.

What you do need to have are excellent English and listening skills. You should also be able to type at around 40 wpm.

Another awesome thing is that TranscribeMe accepts transcribers from all over the world, not just US-based ones.

Signing Up on TranscribeMe – The Application Process

transcription jobs from home at transcribeme

To start working at TranscribeMe, you’ll need to first register. Simply type www.transcribeme.com on Google Chrome – as the site doesn’t support Mozilla Firefox – and click on JOIN AS TRANSCRIPTIONIST.

You’ll then need to fill in your personal details, including your PayPal account and click on GET STARTED.

You will be directed to a page that has several exams and language tests and this might prove to be a little bit confusing, but not to worry. All you have to do is click on link – English Transcriber Training and Exam.

Make sure you download their style guide and read it carefully as it contains the company’s basic guidelines for transcribing, such as whether or not you should name the speakers, how to deal with hard to hear words, etc.

TranscribeMe Training

The reason I insist that TranscribeMe is such an awesome company is that they offer free training.

This company has put in the time and effort to ensure that you understand what is expected of you, in terms of how they want formatting done, how to access your payment, and also how to move around their Work hub.

TranscribeMe Exam

After you are through with the training, you will then do the exam. You will need to do this exam in one sitting.

I have discovered that a lot of people find the test quite challenging but after several attempts, some people pass it.

Ensure you follow their style guide especially on the proper use of punctuation, grammar etc. If you don’t pass the first time, you’ll have four more attempts to go at it.

Not to scare you but only 15% of the people who attempt this test pass. I know you’re one of them!

 TranscribeMe’s Work Process

TranscribeMe usually has very short audio files, about a minute long. They pay $0.33 per audio minute.

The short audio files are encouraging to most people, because truth be told, many newbies find transcribing an audio file that is 30 minutes or longer a bit overwhelming.

They have jobs about 90% of the time, though weekends and holidays can be a bit slow.

However, when there’s lots of work, they send an email to alert freelance transcribers of the same, and that’s when you need to log in and work as much as you can.

They don’t always have clear audio files but such is the transcriber’s life, and therefore discretion is needed here.

If you aren’t sure you can transcribe the file accurately, you might as well not do it. Just click cancel and wait for another file. You won’t be punished for doing that.

All the same, if you do come across an audio file that doesn’t have too much background noise, you can use the DFX audio enhancer, which helps improve sound quality.

TranscribeMe’s turnaround times (deadlines) are pretty flexible.  If you’re transcribing a one-minute audio, you’ll be required to finish it in 60 minutes.

If it’s a four-minute audio, you’ll need to be through within 240 minutes, i.e it’s 60 times the length of the audio file.

Another benefit of working for TM (as it is fondly called by its freelancer team) is that you can compare your work with the QA’s work, that is, the reviewer.

These are the people who review all the transcripts before the documents are submitted to the client. This goes a long way in helping you to become more and more accurate.

Additionally, you can take other accent exams such as the British, Australia, New Zealand and other accent exams. This will give you the opportunity to access more jobs, and therefore, more pay!

Furthermore, the company also offers career advancement opportunities such as joining their Special Teams or becoming one of their reviewers (QA). You will need to take the QA exam for this.

Keys To Succeeding at TranscribeMe

If you are new to working online, you need to know that transcription companies will close your account if you submit low-quality transcripts.

They will do this without batting an eyelid. TranscribeMe does the same. How do you avoid this very uncomfortable situation then?

  • Always proofread your work prior to submission.
  • Do not guess what the speaker said. Type what you hear. If you are unsure, tag appropriately.
  • Check your grammar and spelling.
  • Punctuation. Don’t hand in work that is not punctuated properly. Commas, full stops, hyphens, dashes etc need to be put in the right places.
  • Always follow their style guide.
  • Always compare your transcript with the QA’s.

TranscribeMe Pay

TranscribeMe pay their transcribers $20 per audio hour.

They pay higher rates for transcribers who have a background in medical or legal transcription.

What’s TranscribeMe’s Method of Payment?

TranscribeMe pays their freelancers every Friday via PayPal but you need to have a minimum of at least $10.

I wish they had other payment methods but as it stands now, Paypal is the only payment option.

Remember, you can earn more in TM by taking a couple more exams, for example, the British or Australian accent exam.

Conclusion

This is a great company if you want to kick off your online transcription career.  TranscribeMe also doesn’t have a bad rap like other companies do.

This company gives you the opportunity to earn extra income with very little investment. All you need is a laptop, internet connection, and great headphones.

Convinced that TM is a great company? Sign up with TranscribeMe and begin your online transcription career today!

  • Thank you Sheeroh for your encouragement and guidance in Transcription. I also liked your training. Keep it up and continue being of great help to many.

    • I really wish I could rate this company zero. There are a number of reviews or posts which reveal that this terrible Scam Company often underpays/does not pay workers.

Unfortunately, I did not look for the reviews before I joined. They may provide a service to people who need transcription done. However, they provide services by stealing and using their workers. they set a high threshold for payout ($10 at this time). The threshold is considered high because they pay extremely low. You may very well take up to a year or more in some cases to cash out. The work you do is often scrutinized or the value changed by a stringent and inaccurate review process. There is no checks and balances of the review process. They often make mistakes and deduct pay/refuse work in error and retaliate if you complain. Recently, I was let go in retaliation for complaining about the review practices and they claimed that I only had a little over $7 and refused to pay out and deleted my account. What happened when they closed the account? Simple they kept the earned wages claiming it was below 10 threshold so they did not have to pay, though I was not welcome back. This is their usual practice. Taking earned wages and deleting your account with no recourse is DEFINITELY STEALING. Also, what happened to me appears to be the norm. BEWARE before using this company. By the way, I recall my balance was above or at $20. Which means they had to steal some of my balance to begin with to claim it was under threshold. They delete the account and you have no access to view or dispute the pay when they do so. If you have been used by this company please complain to the BBB and any other applicable organization in your area to stop these crooks.

      • You are very frustrated Janee and I can’t entirely blame you. I particularly do not like the fact that there is a $10 threshold. When they suspend someone’s account, they shouldn’t remain with anyone’s funds.

  • So grateful for this information, very helpful.

I am having problems verifying my paypal account. I have a KCB visa card and I keep getting an error of card issuer hasn’t approved this transaction.

This has delayed my online job debut so much!

    Kindly assist.

    • Hey Maureen! Nice to ‘see’ you. Your KCB account needs to be activated for online transactions. You can either call or visit your branch to ensure this happens. Most likely they will give you a form to fill for this purpose.

  • It’s really wrong to read such a helpful article and not leave a comment, at least to say thanks. Thanks sana Sheeroh and continue with your good work.

  • Hi sheero.
great post thnx fr being so kind sharing such info.
i look forward to learning more about transcription.

  • wow! wow! Sheeroh your doing an amazing job ,congratulations I hope to join you soon in the world of Transcribtion!

  • Hi Sherooh,
Personal am inspired by this post. It has also come on time when am thinking on serious venture on working online. Be blessed abundandly and am looking forward to more such posts. Am signing for this right away!

    • Hey Wycliffe, What I have pointed out above. Ensure you follow their style guide especially on the proper use of punctuation, grammar etc. Your situation isn’t unique by the way. Lots of people find the test quite challenging but after several attempts, some people pass it.

  • Thank you Sheeroh, your insights always lift me to a higher level, I would say it has been a struggle for me at TM but now being at level 13 (grammar boss) I pat myself on the back. I know with time i will soar up higher. Thank you once more dear. Would you kindly talk about speechpad, if you dont mind?

    • Level 13 is good. Soon you’ll be at level 30 and even achieve higher than that! Talk about Speechpad? That’s definitely on the pipeline. Cheers

    • The levels are nothing to do with your ability. They are just a gimmick to make you feel that you have earned a reward of some type. Your level goes up only according to how many minutes you transcribe – nothing more than that. Add a nice little descriptor and people think they”re doing well and are heading towards something. That is not the case.

  • Great job Sheeroh. I am now many steps ahead. Have already signed up with TM, paypal (waiting for their 4 digits to confirm tho’), payoneer card, and skrill. Will start TM training tomorrow. It is enjoyable having a generous and up-to-date mentor like you. Keep it up and see you soon.

    Betty.

    • Many steps ahead indeed. Good progress by the way. Looking forward to hear even more good news, like when you earn your very first dollar. I tell you, you will be so excited abut that 🙂

  • Hi, I took your advice and took the transcribeme exam and passed it. They said it would take 1 to 2 business days to get back to me if they wanted to hire me. It’s been a week and a half and I have not heard back. Is that unusual?
    Thanks.
    Roberta

  • Thanks Sheeroh for the guide on TM. I have registered and have also managed to go thro their style guide. I am now taking their test and I trust to pass – courtesy your training (only for 1k), your inspiration, your guidelines and your dedication to put down so many useful materials.

    • Hello Sheeroh, am in Kenya and would like to join Transcribeme just now but wondering if its actually genuine and if so must i have an paypal account or i can give any other account? how will i get the transcription videos?

Are their transcriptions inEnglish on the most part?

Must i have a website please?

      • Yes. I only recommend legit sites on my blog. You’ll definitely need a Paypal account. Once you pass the tests, you’ll be able to access the audios.
Most audio files are in English, mostly American accents.

  • Hi,

I have attempted the exams several times and failed. I feel that I’ve been doing a good job, however I keep failing.

Please let me know what to do to work for Transcribeme

    Regards,
    Yeshoda

  • I love all that you doing, I may have seen it quite late…
But the good thing is that I have gotten into it. I now have an account with TM and now getting through with the exam.

    • Must be the audio section part or the sentence structure. In my experience, I’ve noted those are the two areas where my trainees mess up. 🙁

    • Just click on ENGLISH TRANSCRIBER TRAINING link. You’ll go through the systems training and then do the exam at the end of it.

  • Hi your blog is a great help. I joined TranscribeMe and passed the exams. I then received an e-mail stating that I need to pass a second exam with 10 Questions and 3 audio files. You only have two attempts to pass. I have already tried once and failed on the actual transcription of the files. Now I am panicking to try the 2nd time because the e-mail stated that if I fail I will be taken off the waiting list. They also give you a deadline to submit the exams and my deadline is 8am tomorrow morning. Any advice – what must I watch for – as far as I can tell I followed the style guide????

    • I haven’t attempted the test myself but I’ve heard the same complaints uttered by several people. Stay tuned to this page. I’ll write an update soon.

      • I attempted the exam again as I had to meet the deadline. My results came through as failed 1 of the 10 questions and failed the one transcription file by 4%. I am not sure what is going to happen now or even if I will still be allowed to start working. Will keep you updated.

  • Thank you so much for the information you a providing for aspiring online workers like me.I am now full of confidence to take the test and pass.Keep it up.

  • Hi there – I am thinking of joining up and doing the online exam. I am proficient at legal typing. I always transcribe with a footpedal and would like to know which brand would match the software that you use. Thanks.

  • Okay, so I failed the English exam twice. Am I not allowed to take the exam anymore? Is that really it? Just two chances and you can never try again later on? Ever?

  • Hi Sheeroh. Am interested in transcribing and you are my motivation. Am very soon buying your book to build on what I know. Shalom

  • Hi Sheeroh,
Thank you for those insightful tips. I have always wanted to work online and transcription seemed like a good venture to look into. So, I registered with TM after reading your article and so far I have failed the exam twice. It’s both demoralizing and confusing because they don’t quite tell you where or why you’ve failed.
But I have got two more chances and I’ll have to utilize them properly. Part two is the toughest one, I keep getting 88% in all the three audios. Is the pass mark 100%? Part one is quite easy I got everything in all the two attempts.

    Keep up the good work.

  • I’m failing the audio part. I scored 95% on one audio (failed as well) and have an average score of 93%. What is the pass mark??

    • @MariaI hope that you’re not offended by this but most of the transcription websites are looking for people whose primary language is English and I can tell by the three sentences that you wrote that your written English may not be as good as you may think. Perhaps this was noticed when it was reviewed by a native speaker and that’s why you’re having some issues.

  • >:( I am not a happy camper. I hit 91%+ on all three audio tests and it says I failed on two of them. Took me a considerable amount of time just to transcribe 3, 4-minute audios. I am surely not looking forward to doing much if I do pass the exam. :/

    • Hello,
I took the exam and passed all the question but the 3 audio test where the results were exactly: 97.20%, 95.59% and 96.24%. Do I have to score 100.00% on the audio tests to pass the exam, because it seems quite impossible to hit that score considering we don’t have any clue where to improve and what to correct if we try the attempts?
I already lost a lot of time transcribing those audios, it’s not fun at all retrying, when I am pretty sure that I was very careful and accurate on my first try, without knowing where did I go wrong approx so I could focus better on my mistakes and not hitting a lower score. I could do worse on the second try according to TM, because I know I did all my best on my first and I wouldn’t know what to improve. Anyway, thanks for your review.
I don’t think I’m going to waste more time with this, not with the score I got, which it’s considerably high.

    • Same was happening to me and by the end they blocked me for violating some rights. I dont know what the passing right is.
I am just writing to tell you that you are not alone.

    • That’s what I said when I saw that it really stress out that you have to pass 100%’ They have the Audio Tests that even if you have experience you will NEVER EVER make it 100%. I am good in writing and I found it very hard to complete the exam. I must say that there is a very obvious reason why they do that so they will have VERY FEW people that pass the exam…. Thanks

    • I passed on second attempt today with 96 something in one and 97 plus in other two. I failed in 1st as I scored 95 something. So it varies from audio to audio.
My guess is trying not to put inaudible tags and don’t over punctuate things.

    • Crazy if a human being expects a fellow human being to score 100% in everything. It’s good I bumped into this article. 88% was my highest score in one of the audios. So if you’re out with such high scores, no need for retrying either. Thanks for this.

  • I registered with TranscribeMe and managed to do the tests. I got 100% on the other tests and 98% on audios and after submission I was congratulated and let to know that my account will be activated. After like 12 hours I was blocked. The email I got was this

We regret to advise that our system has detected fraudulent activity on your account regarding the English Entrance Exam.

As stated in the instructions of our exam, we do not allow applicants to create more than one account in order to complete the exam, nor do we allow answers to be shared across accounts. Any accounts found guilty of either of these offenses will be blocked.

Unfortunately, due to this discovery, we cannot move forward with your application and your account has been blocked.

I neither opened another account nor did I share my answers or share my credentials with anyone only that I shared the TranscribeMe website link with my sister and told her she can give it a try. Would this have been the reason to block me?? I got really disappointed.
