Let’s talk about TranscribeMe – an awesome work from home transcription opportunity.
Is TranscribeMe Legit?
Oh yes it is! The company was founded in 2011 and has a huge customer base that includes lawyers, insurance companies, churches, conference attendees, and researchers who regularly need their audio files transcribed.
It boasts of having partnered with companies such as Kaplan, KMR, Deloitte, Harvard University, Cisco, among others.
TranscribeMe is a great place for newbies to sharpen their skills. The company doesn’t require you to have transcription experience.
What you do need to have are excellent English and listening skills. You should also be able to type at around 40 wpm.
Another awesome thing is that TranscribeMe accepts transcribers from all over the world, not just US-based ones.
Signing Up on TranscribeMe – The Application Process
To start working at TranscribeMe, you’ll need to first register. Simply type www.transcribeme.com on Google Chrome – as the site doesn’t support Mozilla Firefox – and click on JOIN AS TRANSCRIPTIONIST.
You’ll then need to fill in your personal details, including your PayPal account and click on GET STARTED.
You will be directed to a page that has several exams and language tests and this might prove to be a little bit confusing, but not to worry. All you have to do is click on link – English Transcriber Training and Exam.
Make sure you download their style guide and read it carefully as it contains the company’s basic guidelines for transcribing, such as whether or not you should name the speakers, how to deal with hard to hear words, etc.
The reason I insist that TranscribeMe is such an awesome company is that they offer free training.
This company has put in the time and effort to ensure that you understand what is expected of you, in terms of how they want formatting done, how to access your payment, and also how to move around their Work hub.
After you are through with the training, you will then do the exam. You will need to do this exam in one sitting.
I have discovered that a lot of people find the test quite challenging but after several attempts, some people pass it.
Ensure you follow their style guide especially on the proper use of punctuation, grammar etc. If you don’t pass the first time, you’ll have four more attempts to go at it.
Not to scare you but only 15% of the people who attempt this test pass. I know you’re one of them!
TranscribeMe’s Work Process
TranscribeMe usually has very short audio files, about a minute long. They pay $0.33 per audio minute.
The short audio files are encouraging to most people, because truth be told, many newbies find transcribing an audio file that is 30 minutes or longer a bit overwhelming.
They have jobs about 90% of the time, though weekends and holidays can be a bit slow.
However, when there’s lots of work, they send an email to alert freelance transcribers of the same, and that’s when you need to log in and work as much as you can.
They don’t always have clear audio files but such is the transcriber’s life, and therefore discretion is needed here.
If you aren’t sure you can transcribe the file accurately, you might as well not do it. Just click cancel and wait for another file. You won’t be punished for doing that.
All the same, if you do come across an audio file that doesn’t have too much background noise, you can use the DFX audio enhancer, which helps improve sound quality.
TranscribeMe’s turnaround times (deadlines) are pretty flexible. If you’re transcribing a one-minute audio, you’ll be required to finish it in 60 minutes.
If it’s a four-minute audio, you’ll need to be through within 240 minutes, i.e it’s 60 times the length of the audio file.
Another benefit of working for TM (as it is fondly called by its freelancer team) is that you can compare your work with the QA’s work, that is, the reviewer.
These are the people who review all the transcripts before the documents are submitted to the client. This goes a long way in helping you to become more and more accurate.
Additionally, you can take other accent exams such as the British, Australia, New Zealand and other accent exams. This will give you the opportunity to access more jobs, and therefore, more pay!
Furthermore, the company also offers career advancement opportunities such as joining their Special Teams or becoming one of their reviewers (QA). You will need to take the QA exam for this.

Keys To Succeeding at TranscribeMe
If you are new to working online, you need to know that transcription companies will close your account if you submit low-quality transcripts.
They will do this without batting an eyelid. TranscribeMe does the same. How do you avoid this very uncomfortable situation then?
- Always proofread your work prior to submission.
- Do not guess what the speaker said. Type what you hear. If you are unsure, tag appropriately.
- Check your grammar and spelling.
- Punctuation. Don’t hand in work that is not punctuated properly. Commas, full stops, hyphens, dashes etc need to be put in the right places.
- Always follow their style guide.
- Always compare your transcript with the QA’s.
TranscribeMe pay their transcribers $20 per audio hour.
They pay higher rates for transcribers who have a background in medical or legal transcription.
What’s TranscribeMe’s Method of Payment?
TranscribeMe pays their freelancers every Friday via PayPal but you need to have a minimum of at least $10.
I wish they had other payment methods but as it stands now, Paypal is the only payment option.
Remember, you can earn more in TM by taking a couple more exams, for example, the British or Australian accent exam.
This is a great company if you want to kick off your online transcription career. TranscribeMe also doesn’t have a bad rap like other companies do.
This company gives you the opportunity to earn extra income with very little investment. All you need is a laptop, internet connection, and great headphones.
Convinced that TM is a great company? Sign up with TranscribeMe and begin your online transcription career today!
